Off-road expedition through the Siberian taiga — 6 days

The taiga does not wait.
And it never hurries.

540 kilometres to where the asphalt and the signal end. A small convoy of off-road vehicles, river crossings and forest tracks, nights in tents by the river.

Field journal, entry one

An hour after departure, the phone loses its signal. A day later, you stop needing it.

We have led expeditions deep into the taiga since 2017. Not simply “into nature” — but to places where the roads end and the nearest settlement is a day away along the tracks. An off-road vehicle gets you to places that would take a week to reach on foot. After that, it is the usual essentials: dry socks, hot tea and the shoulder of the person travelling beside you.

Where we go

River, mist and forest to the horizon — where the map ends with one word: “taiga”.

Dawn over the Stony Tunguska from above. Our route runs through this landscape.

Route

Six days, each with its own character

The route is built like a real backcountry drop: a graded road on day one, then only bearings, river crossings and forest tracks, with a quiet day by the river in the middle.

Day 01

Where asphalt ends

Meet in the city, get briefed on the vehicles — and two hours later, pass the last fuel station. First grader, first crossing, first track. We set camp on high ground by sunset.

From the journal: “Your hands still hold the wheel like they do in the city. By day three, they let go.”

Day 02–03

Only bearings

Two days off-road: old logging tracks, corduroy roads across the bog, and a crossing of the Kholodny stream. The winch comes out at least once — and that is the best part of the day.

From the journal: “The taiga is not silent. It simply speaks more quietly than the engine.”

Day 04

Rest day. A backcountry sauna

A day without moving on. We catch grayling, heat the backcountry sauna and repair gear. In the evening: the expedition’s longest fire and stories that stay in the taiga.

From the journal: “Tea from a camp kettle tastes better than any espresso. That is not romance, it is a fact.”

Day 05–06

The ridge and the way back

Climb by off-road vehicle to an unnamed ridge — the only point on the route where the taiga stretches to every horizon. Descend to the river, spend the last night, then take the long road home.

From the journal: “From above, you understand: six days were a very small loop in a very large forest.”

Evening of day three

Rain on the tent fly is the only sound that makes the city fall asleep instantly.

A dry sleeping bag, a cup of tea with lingonberry leaves and the taiga beyond the tent flap. Many people return every year for these ten minutes.

FAQ

Questions before the taiga

Do I need off-road driving experience?

No. A category B licence and confidence on the highway are enough. The vehicles are prepared, we brief everyone before departure, and the guide leads through every difficult section. Do not want to drive? You can ride as a passenger.

How safe is it?

The route is registered with the emergency services; the guide carries a satellite phone and tracker, and the first-aid kit is built for remote travel. In eight seasons we have had no serious injuries, partly because the slowest participant sets the pace. That rule is not up for debate.

What if it rains?

It will — this is the taiga. The route and camp are planned for rain: shelters over the kitchen, drying by the fire and reserve travel days. We cancel a departure only under a storm warning.

What should I bring?

A soft bag (not a hard suitcase), warm layers, rainwear and waterproof footwear. After booking, we send a detailed checklist and help you prepare over video. Sleeping bags and mats are available to rent.

How do I reach the starting point?

The group meets in Krasnoyarsk. From there we take care of everything: a night in a guesthouse and the convoy departure from the city are included. You do not need your own vehicle — all off-road vehicles are ours.
